Get over your fear of gym. We Are A Non-Intimidating Gym

So you joined a gym. Great! That’s the first step to making healthier choices and living a healthier lifestyle. But now you have to actually go.

Why is everyone in there so strong and fit…

We know, the people inside look so strong and fit and know what they’re doing. The machines look like torture devices. And most of all, you’ve seen the horror videos of people that don’t know how to use the gym equipment. Sounds like you’ve got a serious case of Gymtimidation.

I think this is doing something!

Now it’s your turn, to take that first step. Literally. Step into your gym. The hustle and bustle of it can be intimidating too, but don’t forget, everyone started somewhere.

That really buff guy over in the corner who’s lifting the 50kg dumb bell? He was probably too scared to step foot into a gym too. Now look where he is! See that person running on the treadmill for 30 minutes straight? I know right, pretty sure they’re a bionic person. But they probably also couldn’t run 3 minutes without feeling like their lung has collapsed when they started.

So what can you do to become these fit people? The person that walks into the gym with confidence and determination? Here are some tips on how to get over your fear of the gym.

1. Step into your gym.

Honestly, the hardest part is getting there. There’s always an excuse ready for you:

  • I can’t be bothered
  • It’s too hot
  • There’s too many people at this time
  • I’m tired
  • I’ll look dumb
  • I don’t know what I’m doing
  • And more!

But you can easily work around these excuses. Trust us. That Netflix series you’re currently binging? That time you’re using can be used at the gym instead. (I mean if you must, bring the Netflix with you.)

2. Avoid peak hour

If you are able to, avoid peak hour time which is usually just before work/school times (6am-9am) and after work (5pm-8pm). If you go during the off-peak times, it also gives you less pressure about trying out the machines you’d like to try without someone waiting to use it next.

3. Get a staff member to show you the ropes

Gym staff are usually really friendly and they know you’re here to try your best! Talk to one of them and ask them to show you how to use the machines. You’ll feel much more comfortable in the gym now that you know someone.

4. Have a plan

There are lots of places to find gym guides and plans such as the internet, facebook groups, PTs and more.

Most of the time, when you join a gym they’ll give you a free PT session, which you can use to get a plan made up just for you or to just get them to show you how to use the machines best. Getting one made up for you will help you know what is best for you, as everyone is different.

5. Take a class

If you’re not sure about what you’re doing on your own, try out a class! A class environment means that everyone is focusing on either themselves or the instructor, so there’s less fear that people are staring at you. It’s also great to have someone tell you what to do, and you’re less likely to get distracted by rest times and the clock, so you’ll really be pushing yourself!

6. Get some supplements

Having some high quality supplements will help you power through your workout and get you the results you’re looking for. Have a Stepz Nutrition, Pre Workout just before your workout, rehydrate with our Intra Workout, and finish up with a Stepz Protein shake post-workout to aid in the muscle recovery process. Too easy!

7. Make a workout playlist

Sometimes the music playing at the gym is NOT to your liking, which can ruin the vibe of your workout. You want something that’s going to pump YOU up. So make a workout playlist of songs that you enjoy, put in your earphones and focus on your workout. It’ll also help you tune out other people who are doing their own workout, so you feel more in your own world.
